Alexander Wang just brought back the claw clip

Alexander Wang just brought back the claw clip

Your favorite '90s hair accessory just made a high-fashion comeback.

Basically nothing is cool from years' past until Rihanna or Alexander Wang says so. Case in point: at Wang's '80s-themed fall 2018 show, models walked the runway wearing a claw clip (!) in their hair. But it wasn't a plain black plastic or tortoiseshell clip that you could pick-up at CVS tomorrow—it was finished in chrome silver and stamped with Wang's logo.

If you aren't sure how to feel about the accessory's comeback—you're not alone. While some women still swear by the clips to hold ultra-thick hair, it hasn't been seen in high-fashion circles since Friends was still on the air. But since the humble scrunchie made its triumphant return to fashion and celebrity culture last year, anything is possible.

"The hair is take on a power executive of the '80s. It's corporate and kind of smart in a way," says lead hairstylist and Redken creative director Guido Palau. "This is Alex's take on the ironic banana clip of that era." Palau and his team twisted the hair up along the centre of the head, then secured it with pins and one or two Wang-branded clips. A blast of Redken Forceful 23 hairspraysecured the "very dynamic and tough" look.

We asked Palau about his personal thoughts on the clip. "I love the way that something that's been around and has a funny connotation can come back. Look at the mullet haircut: three or four years ago it was a no-no, and now it's super cool. I love the way that something is reintroduced into fashion and we look at it again in a different way. That's been happening for a while now, things that were considered not cool or a bit off can be [reimagined] again."

"Also, you've got to remember, lots of girls probably don't remember what the banana clip is," Palau adds. "There's an 18 or 17-year-old girl, they don't know it has a funny connotation to it. They may just think it's super cool to do that in their hair."

No word yet on whether or not Wang will sell the clips come fall. Hairstylists were handling the plastic accessories backstage with the grace of a ballerina carrying a newborn (only a handful were made for the show — so if they broke, they broke). If they do find their way into stories in a few months, we can imagine they'll be right alongside the Tom Ford leather headbands as a must-have item of the season.
